The Best ‘BBL Drizzy’ Renditions on Social Media

jokes

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, then you’re likely aware that the world of hip-hop has been forced to pick sides in one of the most galvanizing rap beefs to rise in recent years between West Coast MC Kendrick Lamar and Toronto hitmaker Drake.

Since the start of the beef— which goes back to Lamar’s 2012 song Control and was recently reignited by his verse on Metro Boomin’ and Future’s joint track Like That— many prominent names from the industry have rallied behind the Compton-born rapper, in Kanye West’s own words, for the “elimination of Drake.” Lending their voices to take down one of the highest-earning and most profit-generating artists of our era, from Future and The Weeknd to A$AP Rocky and Rick Ross, it seems as if the Toronto-born star has bit off more than he could chew by baiting Lamar into a lyrical showdown.

Almost cornered, the former Degrassi actor finds himself on the ropes like never before, forced to dig deeper than usual to find gossip worthy enough to distract audiences from the serious child-grooming allegations made against him in Lamar’s Meet the Grahams and Not Like Us diss tracks. So far, Drake has fired back by accusing Lamar of physically abusing his fiancé Whitney Alford, who also, according to Drake, had a child with Lamar’s manager Dave Free. In addition to these serious allegations, the rapper has also had to settle for silly primary school-level comebacks just to stay afloat across the four diss tracks he has dropped so far.

Of the most notorious ones still making rounds is a line directed at Metro Boomin’ in his first diss track, Push Ups, in which Drake tells the 30-year-old music composer to “shut up and make drums”— a jab that is both inherently childish yet objectively funny. By astutely highlighting Metro Boomin’s role as a producer rather than a rapper, the OVO founder implies that his rival should stick to what he does best while playfully emphasizing on his almost forced silence which is typical of his profession.

Taking the comment to heart, the multi-award-winning beatmaker retaliated by dropping a three-minute-long instrumental on German audio-streaming platform SoundCloud, inviting fans and followers to step up and weigh in by laying down their own rhymes against Drake. Sampling an AI-generated voice chanting “BBL Drizzy”– a nickname coined by Rick Ross, who started the rumors alleging that the self-proclaimed Certified Lover Boy underwent cosmetic surgery— the world’s first ever diss-trumental essentially coaxes random civilians into doing the legwork for him by penning verses atop a beat of his own making, as the Controlla singer patronizingly requested him to.

Cleverly flipping the script, the producer leveraged the intended diss by multiplying his anti-Drake sentiments via proxies. With thousands of aspiring artists having already jumped into the fray, vying for the promised prize of $10,000 and a beat by the renowned producer, the instrumental has now evolved into a social media challenge that shows no signs of fading anytime soon. Articulated in different languages, genres, and styles, the trending sound across social media platforms is a real juggernaut of comedy and musical talent that is, quite frankly, setting the internet ablaze and we’re definitely here for it.

In light of the ongoing feud, and to support our local wordsmiths, we’ve decided to gather some of our favorite entries for the love of the written sport. Below, find 9 of the most entertaining and skillfully crafted submissions we’ve seen fly past our feeds so far.
